Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. This picturesque city rests on the banks of the Limmat River and Lake Zurich, and it is nestled in a truly beautiful hilly woodland. The city is home to a population of 366,809 inhabitants (this rises to around 1 million if you take the greater metropolitan area into consideration) and contrary to popular belief it is not the capital of the country (that is, in fact, Bern). The airport is just a quarter of an hour from the city centre and is ably serviced by rail and bus. The city has a very reliable public transport system that makes travel around Zurich extremely manageable and day passes for all bus and rail services are very affordable.The city has a long history with the arts and boasts many museums, galleries, operas and theatres. Each year it plays host to The Street Parade, one of the world's largest outdoor techno parties attracting around a million people each August. The city is renowned for its many bars, pubs and clubs, and is also home to many fine cafes, restaurants, cinemas and leisure facilities.
